History

Grays is one of Carlisle’s oldest businesses which started in the late 1800s on Blackfriars Street.

From Blackfrairs Street, the business moved to Scotch Street and became known throughout the county as Grays Art Shop.

As well as artist materials, original artwork and prints were available to purchase along with offering a framing service. The orders were transported along the road to the workshop on West Tower Street to be completed and then back to the shop for collection.

In the late 1970s, the previous owners sold the shop on Scotch Street and merged this side of the business with the workshop on West Tower Street. This is where Grays remains today.
